In the 1930's, C.B. van Biel postulated that green plant photosynthesis was an oxidation reduction process in which hydrogen was split for water and used to reduce carbon dioxide to the level of a carbohydrate. It is possible to carry out a partial process of photosynthesis in the laboratory mainly the splitting of water with the evolution of oxygen and the release of hydrogen. This proteolysis of water when carried out with isolated chloroplasts is known as the Hill Reaction after R. Hill who discovered it in 1937. It is necessary to supply a hydrogen acceptor in carrying out the Hill reaction as isolated chloroplasts do not reduce carbon dioxide directly. This kit provides such an acceptor and other reagents needed to carry out the Hill reaction.
