Classifying Objects in the Solar System

Classifying Objects in the Solar System

SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS/PROCESSES

  • The Sun, Earth and other planets, moons, and smaller objects make up the Solar System.
  • Space objects are grouped into categories by such characteristics as size, composition, and motion in space
  • One way to gather data is through direct observations. Accurate and complete observations are important for making conclusions about the natural world
Students use sets of SEPUP/LAB-AIDS cards to identify different kinds of objects found in space, with a focus on those observed in our Solar System. The cards contain comparable characteristics of the different objects and students use this information develop a system of classification. They then compare their own classification system with the standard system used by astronomers. Students then apply their knowledge by analyzing the reasons for the reclassification of Pluto and deciding whether they think it should be classified as a planet or a dwarf planet.
